For those who don’t already know, the web client provides access to Dynamics GP through a web browser.
- The web client interface is very similar to the standard desktop client. This allows for a smooth transition, with minimal user training.
- The web client eliminates the need for locally installed applications. Therefore, your IT staff no longer has to install and maintain each and every workstation. The web client runs on a separate server(s), and is presented to the user through a web browser.
So what’s changed?
- With the initial release of the web client with GP 2013, the web client was dependent on Silverlight. In short, Silverlight is an application framework written by Microsoft. So Microsoft Internet Explorer was the recommended and supported web browser for the web client (for obvious reasons). The web client could be accessed on other browsers such as Chrome, but it didn’t always behave so nicely.
With the release of GP 2016, the web client has been redesigned using HTML 5. This is the latest version of the HTML standard, and is supported across all major web browsers. This includes Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Edge (Microsoft’s latest browser for Windows 10).
HTML 5 compatibility means that the GP 2016 web client can also be accessed using a range of devices. Tablets and mobile devices can now load a fully operational Dynamics GP client. This includes Apple’s iOS and Android.
Beyond the brilliant HTML 5 overhaul, Microsoft has also included several other new features in the web client.
- The user interface has been refreshed to provide a more appealing and intuitive experience.
- A “search” feature has been added that allows users to easily locate any window or report throughout the application.
With the vast improvements to the web client, Dynamics GP users now have a powerful cloud-based option.
