Self-Service Disaster Recovery for Dynamics 365 F&SCM: A major step forward, and a new capacity planning challenge

Microsoft recently announced that Self-Service Disaster Recovery (SSDR) is now available for their Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (also known as F&O or Finance and Supply Chain Management – F&SCM) applications through the Power Platform administration experience. This marks another important milestone in Microsoft’s ongoing transition away from Lifecycle Services (LCS) and toward a unified administration model in the Power Platform Admin Center (PPAC). Microsoft states that SSDR for F&O became available on June 22, 2026, enabling organizations to maintain an asynchronous secondary copy of their production environment in a paired Azure region and perform self-service failover, failback, and disaster recovery testing. This change applies to customers running on LCS and PPAC.

While improved business continuity and disaster recovery capabilities are certainly welcome, there is another aspect of SSDR that organizations should be paying close attention to:

Storage consumption

For many Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain Management customers, SSDR may effectively double the storage required to support a production environment. The evolution from LCS-based disaster recovery

Start by reviewing your Power Platform capacity dashboard and understanding where storage is being consumed.

Many organizations are surprised to discover large volumes of storage being consumed by:

  • Batch job history
  • Data management staging tables
  • System logs
  • Document history
  • Unused sandbox environments

2. Optimize Cleanup Processes

Microsoft provides numerous cleanup routines that can help reduce consumption.

In capacity assessments performed by Sikich, we frequently find organizations retaining years of historical logging information that is no longer needed for operational purposes.

Establishing appropriate retention policies can quickly recover storage.

3. Review Sandbox Strategy

Many customers maintain sandbox environments containing full copies of production data, even when only a small subset is required for testing.
