SIKICH INVESTMENT BANKING ADVISES HAYES LANDFILL / BIG B WASTE SERVICES ON ITS ACQUISITION BY RUMPKE WASTE & RECYCLING

CHICAGO – April 18, 2025 – Sikich Corporate Finance, a leading investment bank for middle market companies and a wholly owned subsidiary of Sikich, a Chicago-based leading global technology-enabled professional services company, recently served as the exclusive sell-side advisor to Hayes Landfill (dba Hayes Landfill and Big B Waste Services) on its acquisition by Rumpke Waste & Recycling.

Hayes operated as the last remaining private landfill in Indiana, accepting non-hazardous solid waste, construction debris, and non-hazardous industrial and special waste while Big B Waste Services provided waste hauling services for both commercial and residential customers. Rumpke’s acquisition of Hayes enables Rumpke to immediately expand its footprint in the adjacent eastern Indiana market, as well as drive Rumpke’s existing volumes in that footprint to the nearby Hayes landfill, streamlining operations and reducing transport time for Rumpke’s existing hauling operations.

“This transaction signifies a pivotal moment in the waste hauling market in the Greater Indianapolis area. Hayes provides innovation and rapid growth for Rumpke, enabling expanded reach for the combined entity,” said Sikich principal, Tom Bayer, CPA. Randy Hayes, who previously owned the business with brother Steve Hayes, added “The research and expertise from the Sikich team played a vital role in guiding us through this process and ensuring a successful outcome that benefits the Hayes team, our clients, and the future of both organizations.”

Within the industry, there is a vast variety of highly nuanced and burdensome regulatory and permitting processes that present significant challenges in greenfielding a new landfill or launching new hauling operations. As a result of these challenges, M&A activity has picked up in recent years as larger players seek to consolidate operations and financial buyers (e.g., private equity firms and family investment offices) continue to increase their interest and investment in the space.

Sikich gained an understanding of the regulatory hurdles required in the M&A process and utilized its in-depth expertise to advise on this acquisition. “Now is the time for waste haulers to consider other avenues for growth and valuation creation in their business,” said Kurt Estes, principal. “With the very active M&A market for landfills and waste haulers, and valuations near all-time highs, it is important for businesses to leverage this. We’re pleased to have facilitated an acquisition that takes market status into consideration and positions both companies for continued growth.”

Sikich Investment Banking offers capital markets advisory and mergers and acquisitions services. The team has deep experience across many industries, particularly manufacturing and distribution, business and professional services, technology and e-commerce, and health care and life sciences. Transaction terms were not disclosed.
