Your nonprofit is leaving Dynamics GP. Should your fund accounting change too?

INSIGHT 2 min read

Moving from Microsoft Dynamics GP to Business Central is more than a software upgrade. It’s an opportunity to rethink how your nonprofit manages funds, grants, reporting, and financial operations.

As Microsoft Dynamics GP approaches the end of its product lifecycle, nonprofit organizations are evaluating their next financial management system. But replacing GP doesn’t necessarily mean recreating the same fund accounting structure in a new platform.

In this on-demand webinar, Selena Elledge, CPA, Principal and Nonprofit Microsoft Leader at Sikich, explores how nonprofits can assess their fund accounting requirements and determine the right approach when moving to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.

Three levels of fund accounting in Business Central

Not every nonprofit needs the same level of fund accounting functionality. During the webinar, Selena outlines three approaches organizations can consider based on their financial and operational requirements.

Level 1: Grant and program tracking

For organizations that primarily need to track revenue and expenses by grant, program, or department, Business Central’s core functionality can provide reporting and budget-to-actual visibility without requiring self-balancing fund accounting.

Level 2: Basic fund accounting

Organizations requiring separate trial balances by fund, automated due-to and due-from entries, and centralized or decentralized payment processing may benefit from additional fund accounting functionality.

Level 3: Advanced fund accounting and grant management

For nonprofits with more complex requirements, advanced solutions can support restricted and unrestricted funds, endowment management, grant administration, compliance tracking, complex allocations, and more.

The webinar also walks through three accounting examples in Business Central, demonstrating how organizations can manage expenses across multiple grants or funds, automate interfund transactions, and handle different payment structures.

Beyond fund accounting, Selena discusses important migration considerations, including financial reporting, budgeting, historical data, chart of accounts design, and opportunities to use AI during migration planning.
