Akron Not-for-Profit Leaders Forum: Hidden in Plain Sight - Reducing the Risk of Fraud and Employee Dishonesty in Organizations
Not-for-profit institutions are particularly vulnerable to acts of fraud and employee dishonesty. Most are never discovered and continue for years. This seminar will examine the who, what, when, how and why of this type of malfeasance that can be devastating to the mission of the organization and its public image. Fraud schemes common to not-for-profits will be outlined as well as prevention programs including separation of duties for a small staff. Best practices related to handling an incident, evidence gathering and security, proper reporting, whistle-blower systems, liaison with law enforcement and use of forensic professionals are discussed.

About the presenter:
Ms. O’Connor, ASA, CFE has worked exclusively in the field of forensics since 1979 specializing in fraud and employee dishonesty matters for not-for-profits, municipalities and school districts. A former two- term elected official, she brings a unique perspective into the pressures and constraints facing not-for-profit entities which are highly sensitive to adverse publicity when dealing with fraud incidents. Ms. O’Connor is the Partner-in-Charge of the Forensics and Valuation Services division of Sikich LLP managing a staff of twenty-five professionals dedicated to helping clients prevent fraud, improve internal controls and dealing with the organizational aftermath of an act of employee dishonesty.
